About Kathryn A. Devlin

I am a survivor. Before the age of 14, I had lost my brother to cancer and survived treatment for a similar cancer myself. These events took place within three years and form the core of much of my art. Art is a way to express and understand what I have been through.  I also create works in the hopes of making the human brain recognize a universal image like DNA in a different way. The goal of my paintings is to connect my interest in biology and the animal kingdom with the desire to create images of optimism and hope. The very essence of life, DNA, cells, and organs, become geometric structures. These structures are sturdier representations of their fragile real-life counterparts. I explore a passion for color through studies that use value within a hue in order to create depth within two-dimensional geometric shapes. I continue to explore how to create balanced and unified compositions that celebrate the beauty of life on a two-dimensional surface.
